The Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in a consortium with AIUT Sp. z o.o., is carrying out a three-year project titled “Intelligence Augmentation Ecosystem for Water Distribution Network Analysts” (2021–2023), funded under Sub-measure 1.1.1 of the Smart Growth Operational Program 2014–2020, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Intermediate Body: the National Center for Research and Development.
This project addresses the economically, socially, and environmentally important issue of reducing water losses in water supply networks. The technical infrastructure of water distribution systems requires constant monitoring, including through the use of telemetry solutions, most recently in the form of the Internet of Things (IoT). The significant amounts of data collected during monitoring require processing and interpretation by analysts—for example, to detect anomalies such as water leaks or equipment failures—and their decisions are critical to maintaining the infrastructure’s operational efficiency. An analyst or dispatcher uses data analysis tools to gain insights into the infrastructure and its current condition. The role of analytical tools in this context is to provide maximum support to such individuals, both by providing sophisticated data analysis tools—so-called artificial intelligence—and by offering intelligent assistance, including in the areas of enhancing their expertise and improving the speed and accuracy of their decisions. The goal of the project is to create a platform of software tools to support the analysis of water distribution network data. By using this platform, it will be possible to increase the effectiveness of detecting leaks, as well as instances of imbalance and other anomalies that may signal events leading to technical problems in the future. The R&D work in the project focuses on three main research topics: • machine learning methods tightly integrated with the data acquisition and storage layer, • applications of Augmented Intelligence that learns by observing analysts’ work, thereby facilitating the selection and configuration of their tools, • solutions for managing the configuration of the IoT layer using the LoRa protocol, employing a unique method of task aggregation and delegation to reduce overall energy consumption and extend sensor battery life.
