Optimization and load balancing in next generation wireless networks

 NCBIR

Project funded by the LIDER program for the years 2013 - 2015, with a value of 1 135 thousand PLN, funded by NCBiR

The aim of the project is to increase the performance of wireless networks (LTE, WiFi and heterogeneous) with simultaneously reducing the cost of construction and maintenance through more efficient use of radio resources and automate the selection of the parameters of the network.

The project started in January 2013 from the construction of discrete event simulation environment to analyze the efficiency of network protocols in mobile networks. Prepared the environment for simulation that reflects the customer's location, switching between base stations and managing their configuration. The environment implements three selected network management protocols.

Performance analysis of mobile wireless networks requires a reliable method to reflect the movement of users. So far developed models do not take properly into account the daily and weekly patterns of user behavior but are focused on the statistical characteristics of the movement of persons. We have developed a new mobility model: RLMM, which allows to define the characteristics of users, such as working hours, commuting between home and work and social activities. The development of reliable models of mobility required to develop a tool to collect data such as the level of the signal and the location of the wireless user. Developed technology to track and monitor user's activity at very low consumption of mobile phone battery.

In order to execute the project created new Wireless Network Optimization Team at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Sciences of Polish Academy of Sciences. Its members are the project manager and 3 doctoral students, including two new employees. The OLBIN project allowed to join IITIS PAN to the COST WiNeMO (Wireless Networks of Moving Objects), in which Krzysztof Grochla serves as a member of the management committee. The project so far published 3 articles at international conferences, describing the developed mobility model and simulation of user's switching.
